Aspiring 29er

Henri & Miles

(and a 29er)

Henri and Miles, 15-year-old twin brothers from the Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, have achieved great success in the sport of sailing. Members of the Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club, they proudly represent their home club. Their journey into the fast-paced 29er class began not too long ago, leaving the Optimist class early to take on this new challenge. Inspired by some of Sorrento’s most accomplished sailors, Tokyo 2020 Olympians Tess Lloyd (49erFX), Sam and Will Phillips (49er), and Olympic Coach Harry Mighell (49erFX), and, the desire to go fast, the boys decided to dive into the 29er scene.

Their first step? Purchasing a second-hand boat sight unseen from Tasmania – a vessel that needed plenty of repairs before it was seaworthy. Undeterred, they braved a cold Melbourne winter to learn the ropes, even enduring their first sail, which almost ended in hypothermia! Thanks to their determination, Henri and Miles quickly found their footing in the 29er. Their hard work paid off when they recently won the junior division at their first national championship and placed 6th overall in the open fleet – an extraordinary achievement, especially against older and more experienced competitors. Driven by the motivation to challenge yourself, Henri and Miles constantly push their limits. They believe that success is a stepping stone to bigger challenges, which is why they’re keen to work towards the international stage.

Henri and Miles value not just the competition but the friendships and camaraderie that sailing brings, making them exceptional ambassadors for their sport. Despite their youth, they approach every challenge with maturity and a willingness to learn, recognising that success is a journey requiring persistence and hard work. Beyond competing, Henri and Miles give back to their sailing community by teaching others to sail at their club, a role they find incredibly rewarding. Sailing has brought them not just success but lifelong friendships and invaluable experiences. They are excited to take the next step in their journey, representing their club and country on the world stage.
