Aspiring 29er

Miles

(on Helm)

Miles, the other half of the talented twin team from the Mornington Peninsula, brings his unique flair and energy to the sailing world. Like his brother, Miles has served as Junior Club Captain and won the Junior Club Championships at the Sorrento Sailing and Couta Boat Club. While the twins share many accomplishments, Miles brings his own approach to the sport, balancing competition with a deep sense of fun and enjoyment. For Miles, sailing isn’t just about winning – it’s about the thrill of the race, spending time with friends, and having a good time on the water.

Beyond the 29er, Miles also sails the WASZP and Windsurfer LT, and he’s keen to expand his horizons. Wing foiling and the iQFOIL are high on his list of things to try, though with a packed schedule of 29er training, sailing the WASZP and Windsurfer, finding the time can be tricky. Still, Miles is confident he’ll get to it one day. “I’ve tried surfing a couple of times, and I love being in the waves. Foiling in the waves would be amazing,” he says with a grin.

Miles has always had a strong connection to the water, whether it’s a quick swim, a full day exploring reefs, or competing in challenging conditions. He even inspired his family to travel to Cairns to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef – an unforgettable adventure that remains one of his favourite memories.

Looking back at his Optimist days, Miles recalls them fondly as a time of growth and success, including his selection for the Australian Optimist Sailing Team. He recalls how Jack Lewis made it so much fun by setting up challenges like night sailing and big wave sailing. However, it’s his role now as helm of the 29er that truly excites him. For Miles, there’s nothing quite like high winds and big waves, sending the boat flying across the water. “It’s such a thrill,” he shares.

Miles plays a vital role in giving back to his sailing community by teaching at the club, where he’s affectionately known as ‘Smiley Miley’ among junior sailors. Whether he’s helping children or adults learn the ropes, Miles finds the experience deeply fulfilling. “It’s great to get positive feedback from parents and see kids excited to return and improve. Helping them achieve their goals makes it all worthwhile,” he shares.

For Miles, sailing is as much about joy and connection as it is about competition. With his sights set on the international 29er circuit, he’s excited to take on new challenges, learn from the best, and continue having fun on the water.
